Making Minecraft Survival a Little Smoother — Introducing Tool Satchel

Building a small quality-of-life mod for Minecraft Java Edition.

It Started With a Small Annoyance

If you’ve played Minecraft Survival for a while, you’ve probably experienced this: you’re deep underground, mining away, and suddenly your pickaxe breaks.

You have another one in your inventory, so it’s not really a problem. But now you have to stop, open your inventory, find the replacement, put it in your hotbar, and continue mining.

It’s a tiny interruption, but one that happens surprisingly often.

That got me thinking: what if Minecraft could handle this automatically, without taking control away from the player?

That’s where Tool Satchel started.

A Small Bag With a Useful Purpose

Tool Satchel is a Minecraft quality-of-life mod I’ve been working on that adds a new craftable item to the game.

The idea is simple. Players can craft a Tool Satchel using a regular Bundle and a Copper Ingot. Each satchel can hold up to four tools, keeping spare equipment neatly stored without filling up the entire inventory.

When the tool you’re using breaks, the mod automatically looks inside your satchels for a replacement and equips it in the same hotbar slot.

It prioritizes an identical tool first. So if your stone pickaxe breaks, it’ll look for another stone pickaxe before moving on to a better one, like a copper or iron pickaxe.

And because the mod only uses tools you’ve deliberately placed inside the satchels, you remain in control of what gets equipped.

No inventory management needed, just keep mining!

Keeping Things Simple

One thing I wanted from the beginning was for the mod to feel like something that could belong in vanilla Minecraft.

Nothing too complicated, no unnecessary menus, and definitely no constant notifications.

Players can carry multiple satchels, and the mod searches through all of them for suitable replacements. I’ve also added a subtle notification that lets you know when you’re using your last available tool, so you don’t suddenly find yourself completely out of pickaxes.

From an Idea to a Working Mod

I’ve been building Tool Satchel using MCreator, with some custom Java code to handle the more specific inventory mechanics.

It’s been a fun little project, especially figuring out how to make the satchels work together, automatically select the right replacement, and keep everything feeling natural within Minecraft’s existing inventory system.

What seemed like a simple idea at first turned into an interesting exercise in gameplay design, user experience, and solving those small problems that can make a big difference when playing.

There’s still some polishing to do, but seeing the concept actually work in-game has been really satisfying.

What’s Next?

Tool Satchel is currently being playtested, with the focus on making sure everything works reliably, improving the inventory experience, and catching any unexpected behavior before a public release.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops and hopefully sharing it with other Minecraft players soon!
